Delete my data
Effective 2026-05-30 · Last updated 2026-05-30
Carets stores almost everything on your device. There is no server-side account for us to delete — but here is exactly how to wipe the data we (and your own cloud) do hold. This page satisfies Google Play's "Data deletion" disclosure and Apple's "Account deletion" requirement.
One important note about external files. Carets can open and edit files from your phone's Files app, iCloud Drive, or Google Drive. Those files are not owned by Carets — they belong to you and live in your own cloud. Deleting your Carets data does not delete those files, and uninstalling Carets does not delete them either. To remove an external file, delete it in iCloud Drive / Google Drive / the Files app directly.
1. Inside the App (recommended)
- Open Carets.
- Go to Settings → Account → Delete account & data.
- Confirm. The App will:
- delete the contents of your iCloud / Google Drive backup container first (if cloud sync was on);
- revoke Carets’s access to your cloud and sign you out;
- then erase the local SQLite database (all internal notes, projects, tags, and the recent-files list), preferences, and editor state.
This action cannot be undone. If you only want to turn off cloud sync but keep your local notes, instead toggle Settings → Cloud sync → Off; the next sync sweep will not run.
2. By uninstalling
Uninstalling the App removes the local notes database, the recent-files list, and the editor state instantly. It does not automatically delete the backup copy in your iCloud / Drive — Apple and Google retain it under their own policies. It also does not delete external files you edited with Carets, which live in your own cloud regardless. If you want both gone, use Settings → Account → Delete account & data first, then uninstall.
3. By email (if you no longer have the App)
If you have already uninstalled and want help removing the remaining cloud backup or purchase records, email contact@carets.app from any address and include:
- The platform you used (iOS or Android).
- The store order ID from Apple's or Google's purchase receipt (if you bought Pro). We use this to look up your RevenueCat record.
We will confirm completion within 30 days, or sooner where required by law (for example, the GDPR's one-month default). We may need to verify the request using information you have already shared with us.
4. What we can and can't delete
| Data | How it's deleted |
|---|---|
| On-device internal notes, folders/tags, editor preferences, recent-files list | Inside the App, or by uninstalling. |
| Your iCloud / Drive sync container (for internal notes) | Inside the App via Delete account & data, or by deleting the folder in your iCloud / Drive yourself. We can't reach into your cloud on your behalf if you have uninstalled the App. |
| External files you opened/edited (Files, iCloud Drive, Google Drive) | We don't own these. Delete them in their original location. Carets only kept a pointer (security-scoped URI) and a cursor position locally; that pointer is removed when you delete all data. |
| Purchase / entitlement records (RevenueCat) | Email contact@carets.app. We remove your subscriber profile within 30 days. Note that Apple, Google, and our payments processor may retain transaction records they are legally required to keep (tax, refund, audit). |
| Support email history | Email contact@carets.app. We can purge your thread or the whole inbox identifier. |
| Site analytics (Google Analytics, if you opted in) | Decline cookies on the banner (or open Cookie Policy and reopen the banner). GA4 honours a deletion request via the Google Analytics User-Deletion API — email us your _ga client ID and we will submit the request. |
